The VA streamline refinance loan, or IRRRL, has a number of advantages to veterans wanting to refinance their VA loan. It requires little paperwork, but there are a few documents that are necessary to process this loan. One of these documents is the veteran’s DD-214, or DD Form 214.
What is a Veteran’s DD-214?
A DD-214 is proof that you were in military service. The DD-214 Includes these elements:
- Discharge of service
- Dates of service
- Current classification
- If you are retired, separated, National Guard or Reserve status
You will need your DD-214 to claim most of your military benefits including VA loans.
Request A Copy of your DD-214 Form
If you have misplaced your original DD-214 you can request a free copy of your DD-214 at the National Archive official government site- archives.gov through the eVetRecs system and fill out an online form. You have to be either a service member or the next of kin to request the DD-214 form.
Other information requested are:
- Veterans Social Security Number
- Branch of service
- Dates of military service
- Place of discharge
- It can also be useful to let them know why you want this form as well.
Remember when looking for a replacement for your DD-214 remember that if you access it correctly it will be free. There will be other companies out there who will do the work for you on your behalf for a fee. This really isn’t necessary because of the simplicity of the process on your own. Hiring an outside source would take more time and money than doing it by yourself.
